A pressing challenge is the lack of biosecurity awareness in wildlife tourism, which can compromise both animal well-being and ecosystem health. Close human-wildlife interactions—especially in informal or rural tourism settings—can increase stress for animals and disrupt natural behaviors and their habitat. As a veterinary professor and researcher in animal health and biosecurity, I bring expertise in risk management, education, and planning to build resilience in the agri-food and tourism sectors. I design and deliver training focused on the importance of biosecurity, cross-border cooperation, equipping professionals with the knowledge and skills needed for adaptive, evidence-based practices in line with climate and heritage preservation goals. Through PHOENIX 4.0, I aim to address this challenge by developing awareness tools and training that promote responsible, biosecure, and wildlife-friendly tourism.
